Sharing Yoga with the World ~ article on Elephant Journal

12 Sep

Yoga without moral foundation is an impossibility… I believe that moral foundations are what is lacking in most of our lives.

~Georg Feuerstein, yoga scholar and Indologist, quoted in Yoga Unveiled

It seems now, more than ever, we need yoga in our lives. Inspiring others on a global level can be achieved at an event like the Olympics.

In an article published on Elephant Journal this past Sunday, I discussed why this makes sense in reference to yoga’s foundational text, Yoga Sutras, and its morals, Yamas and Niyamas; as they correspond to the philosophy of the Olympic Games. Not only would yoga inspire through Asana, but it would encourage others to learn more about its practice, culture, and philosophy.

How Yoga will inspire the olympics | elephant journal.

Listening to President Barack Obama addressing the attacks on US in Libya today, he mentioned, “A country is only as strong as the character of its people.”

Yoga is healing; it focuses on the mind-body-spirit connection. It isn’t a religion; it’s a way of life. It encourages us to take responsibility for our own actions in a positive way. Let’s share the effect of yoga, to shape the character of a better world.

Thank you,

Another great article Marina. I think living in increasingly secular societies, we need something to fill the vacuum when it comes to the teaching of morality.

Thanks so much Adrian! I think we’re so separated from our own minds, bodies, spirits, and that of those around us, that resorting to violence and destruction has become too frequent. I believe that getting closer to our nature and understanding that there are some basic human morals to live by can only be a good thing. I appreciate your comment!

Thanks for taking a read of the article Karen. I’m continually inspired by yogi’s who keep up with a practice and I appreciate you mentioning that back to me. :)
